Exploring creativity, technology, and what comes next

A hands-on educational encounter holds value far beyond what students can learn in a day. It helps them imagine how to use their creativity and technical skills to innovate for the future.

RELAY Next students recently visited a local Apple Store for a hands-on photography course centered on the iPhone's advanced camera technology. While this visit was not classified as an official course customized for a RELAY Next experience, it served as an exploratory opportunity for our students to experience Apple's educational approach while allowing our organization to evaluate how future programming could support our broader STEAM-focused goals.

What began with the art of photography quickly expanded into a larger conversation about creativity, digital tools, experiential learning, and the value of connecting students directly with professionals who possess valuable expertise within the technology industry.

THE EXPERIENCE

Looking Beyond the Camera Button

Cameras built into everyday devices such as smartphones offer convenient access to photography. However, effective photography still requires keen observation, sound decision-making, and deliberate intention.

During the session, our students explored a variety of tools and features available through Apple's iPhone camera and photo applications. The Apple Store's expert instructor demonstrated advanced features and allowed participants to follow along using the latest devices and technology. Students were actively engaged throughout the class and encouraged not only to participate, but also to ask questions. Learners received precise guidance throughout the class while remaining free to explore creatively during the learning process.

Students were not simply told where to tap. They were encouraged to pay close attention to what changed, compare results, and consider how the same environment could appear completely different depending on the photographer's settings, perspective, and active features.

The activity followed a process familiar to artists, engineers, designers, and developers.

Students examined framing, perspective, light, movement, and the visual details present in their surroundings.

They tested camera tools and changed how they positioned both the device and themselves.

Students analyzed their images, compared results, and considered what worked differently from one attempt to the next.

Each observation created an opportunity to adjust, try again, and make a more intentional creative decision.

LEARNING IN ACTION

From Demonstration to Discovery

The photographs from the experience reveal a clear learning progression: students listened, practiced, asked the instructor for clarification, reviewed what they created, and then experimented again.

THE STEAM CONNECTION

Creativity and Technology Are Not Opposites

Photography sits naturally at the intersection of art and technology. A student may begin by thinking about the subject of an image, but the process can also lead to questions involving optics, sensors, software, artificial intelligence, image processing, interface design, and human perception.

Every camera feature represents decisions made by teams of engineers, programmers, designers, researchers, and creative professionals. Understanding that connection helps students recognize that the technology they use every day was created by people who were once imaginative kids much like themselves—and that they, too, possess that same creative and ingenious energy.

BUILDING WITH INTENTION

We Evaluate Experiences Before We Expand Them

This visit also served an important organizational purpose.

RELAY Next does not employ activities simply because they are available. We want to understand how an experience supports our students, how it aligns with our educational methodology, and how it could be adapted to create meaningful learning rather than passive entertainment.

Observing the photography session gave us an opportunity to evaluate the instructional environment, student engagement, technology requirements, pacing, and opportunities for deeper curriculum alignment.

A strong partnership does more than provide access. It combines the strengths of each organization to create an experience intentionally designed for the learners we serve.

WHAT COMES NEXT

From Capturing Images to Creating With Code

The collaborative Apple photography experience was our first stop with the technology leader—not the final destination.

RELAY Next is now preparing for a future Apple visit centered on coding. Unlike this initial exploratory session, the next experience is expected to be developed specifically for our students.

The goal is to move learners from using familiar technology to understanding how instructions, logic, sequencing, and creative problem-solving can be used to build something of their own.

Opening More Doors for Young Learners

The future of STEAM education cannot be built by schools, families, nonprofits, or businesses working in isolation.

Students benefit when educational organizations can connect them with professionals, technology, workplaces, and experiences that make abstract concepts tangible. These connections help learners understand not only what they are studying, but where that knowledge can lead.

We appreciate the Apple team in Woodbridge, Virginia, for welcoming our students, guiding the experience, and helping us consider what future collaboration could make possible.
